Product Description

Children are able to communicate by signing before they develop the skills necessary for speech. By teaching simple sign language to children from as young as eight months, we can help them to convey their emotions and their needs, as well giving them a valuable head start in their social and intellectual development.

My First Signs is beautifully illustrated by Annie Kubler with 12 pages of basic baby signs for such words as milk, more, hot, potty, all done, and much more. Signing to your baby can help you and your child communicate effectively, thereby lessening frustration levels at both ends. What's more, you'll be surprised how easy it is for you and your baby to begin to "talk" to each other.

Benefits of Baby Signing

Babies understand more than they can physically say. Your infant is able to communicate using their hands and fingers before they have control over their speech muscles. Indeed, your baby can start producing recognizable signs from as early as seven months. The ability to communicate then reduces frustration levels for both you and your child and it encourages positive language development. Using standard Sign Language signs like those in My First Signs, Illustrated by Annie Kubler will allow your child to be understood by others who also sign.

Baby signing is easy. Always use the word and the sign together in context to make the connection. For example, say and sign for "milk" during feeding. In order to transition out of signing and into using words, simply start dropping the signs and keep using the words - usually about 20 to 24 months - sometimes later. Alternate saying the word with the sign and just saying the word, eventually dropping the sign altogether. Now that your baby has made the connection, he or she will start using the words to communicate with you.
